A PDF is a working archive
A digital report is useful while the project is live. You can search it by keyword, copy passages, send it around. It is an essential tool for the genealogist and the client during the work. But it is not an artefact.
A PDF will not reach your great-grandchildren in the form you created it in. In thirty or fifty years the format may be unreadable. Storage media degrade. Cloud services close. This is not a problem now. It is a problem for family memory later.
A book is a physical object that outlives the people in it
Leather binding, gold tooling, paper of a specific weight, stitching by methods that have been tested for centuries — that combination is not nostalgia. It is engineering. A book made this way lives for fifty to a hundred years under normal storage conditions.
People pick up a book. They leaf through it over tea. Children look at the photograph of a great-great-grandfather and ask who that is. That kind of conversation does not start with a PDF.
What belongs in a family book
- a literary text — biographies in historical context, not a dry summary
- photographs and scans of documents, with captions
- the family tree as a printed chart, usually as a foldout
- migration maps showing where the family lived in each period
- an index of names and dates for navigation
- a foreword from the commissioning family member to future generations
How they are made
Not every printer makes family books. The run is one to three copies, with hand work on multiple stages. We have our own printing house because outsourcing binding always means a compromise on quality and timing.
Natural leather, treated at each stage under a magnifying glass, gold-foil tooling done hot. An endpaper with the family map — the places your ancestors actually lived. A silk ribbon as a bookmark. A presentation case or a small chest, by request.
