Genealogy in Krasnodar

Rebuilding family history from the archives of the Krasnodar Krai

Kuban is Cossack country. Local genealogy rests on the service records of Cossacks, stanitsa (Cossack village) parish registers, and the files of resettlement boards through which families arrived from Ukraine and the central governorates.

The catch is that part of the records was lost during the Civil War. So the work here often means cross-referencing several partial sources — stanitsa, Host and church — to hold a line together.

What sets this region apart

Working in Krasnodar

Kuban is Cossack country. The main sources are Cossack service records, stanitsa parish registers, and files of the resettlement boards. Many holdings were lost during the Civil War, so the work often relies on cross-referencing several partial archives.

Common questions

Research in Krasnodar

My ancestors were Kuban Cossacks. Where do we start?

With a consultation: we need the stanitsa of registration and at least a name from the 19th or early 20th century. From there we follow the Host’s service and household lists and the stanitsa metric books.

Is it true that few Kuban records survive?

Part was indeed lost in the Civil War, but not all. We cross-reference stanitsa, Host and church sources — which lets us rebuild a line even where one archive has gaps.

What if my ancestors were settlers, not Cossacks?

We work with those too. Separate household and resettlement files survive for peasant settlers — through them we reach the governorate the family came from.
